“MAPS teams built my church…MAPS teams built my Bible School. I am a product of their work.” – Pastor Lockhart, Calvary Church of Freeport, Grand Bahama.
The first MAPS Construction team was led by Norm Correll in 1966 to build a church in Freeport, Grand Bahama. That building is still in use today as a youth facility by Calvary Church.
Norm was our special guest at CORE3ten, Legacy Luncheon during the Assemblies of God Centennial Celebration. Much to Norm’s surprise, Pastor Lockhart attended the luncheon and the two got to meet. As well, Pastor Lockhart’s wife and teenage boys were with him, all of whom attend youth group today in the building Norm and MAPS Construction Team One helped build.
It is always amazing to me as I learn of another impact construction ministry has made on individual’s lives. Pastor Lockhart shared with me, “I tell my people all the time we benefit from other people’s labors, who gave and served us without any expectation of a return.” Pastor Lockhart now challenges his people to give from that same spirit of selflessness.
One more reason construction ministry makes an impact . . . the work of several teams on a small island 50 years ago in the Caribbean still bears witness as a challenge to spur a congregation on to good deeds today.
